I will be focusing on the following library skills with students in grades Kindergarten through Fifth grade.

Kindergarten:

  • Library Orientation
    • We will learn how to navigate and find things in our library space.
  • Library Citizenship
    • We will discuss what it means to be a member or citizen of a group, and discuss the rights, privileges and responsibilities that come with that citizenship.
  • Parts of a book
    • Specifically front cover and back cover
  • How to care for books
  • The job of authors and illustrators
  • Alphabetical order and practice of our alphabetizing skills
  • Self-selection of appropriate materials
  • Appreciation for literature
  • Literature responses
  • Author and Illustrator studies

First Grade:

  • Library Orientation
    • We will learn how to navigate and find things in our library space.
  • Library Citizenship
    • We will discuss what it means to be a member or citizen of a group, and discuss the rights, privileges and responsibilities that come with that citizenship.
  • Basic organization of the library
    • We will learn about the various sections in fiction and non-fiction.
  • Parts of a book
    • Specifically title page, table of contents and glossary
  • Reinforce skills of alphabetical order and alphabetizing
  • Location skills in Easy Book section of our library
  • Fiction vs. Non-Fiction
    • Recognize the non-fiction books are a source of information

Second Grade:
